Is Cyanuric Acid Harmful to Human Health?

Simply put, cyanuric acid is safe for humans when used in accordance with international standards and regulations. As long as it is used scientifically and correctly, any potential harm can be avoided.

What Is Cyanuric Acid?

Cyanuric acid, also known as ICA, CYA, isocyanuric acid, and trihydroxycyanobenzenamine, is a white powder, crystal, or white or blue flake that is odorless.

It can be added artificially and is primarily used as a chlorine stabilizer in outdoor pools to prevent chlorine from breaking down under sunlight.

Pool disinfectants such as SDIC and TCCA produce cyanuric acid when dissolved in water.

While other chlorine stabilizers are available for other applications, ICA is the only one available for swimming pools.

  • Prolonged improper use of dichlorine or trichlorine disinfectants leads to the accumulation of cyanuric acid, a disinfection byproduct.
  • Insufficient replenishment of fresh water makes it difficult to “dilute” concentration to within safe limits.
  • Failure to perform regular water changes in the pool results in the long-term accumulation of the reagent in the pool water.

What Are the Signs of Excessive Chlorine Concentration?

While residual chlorine levels meet standards, the water lacks bactericidal properties; continued use of disinfectants does not resolve this issue. Algae and bacteria in the pool water increase, causing cloudiness.

If the concentration is too high, immediately stop using sodium dichloro and trichloro disinfectants, switch to Calcium Hypochlorite, and then adjust the CYA concentration by partially changing the water or draining and refilling the pool.

There are specialized cyanuric acid removers available on the market, but they are few and far between and not yet fully developed.

Can Low Levels Be Harmful to Humans?

Generally speaking, excessively low levels do not cause direct harm to humans. However, if the level is too low, there will be insufficient residual chlorine in the water, which can lead to bacterial growth in the pool and pose a health risk.

  • Frequent water changes dilute the solution.
  • Long-term use of non-stabilized chlorine disinfectants, such as calcium hypochlorite or bleaching water.
  • Natural degradation.

How to Increase the Level?

Before adding the product, measure the concentration of chlorine stabilizer in the pool and calculate the required dosage based on that measurement.

Amount needed = (Target concentration – Current concentration) × Pool volume ÷ Purity factor.

Solid Granule Stabilizer

Place the granules in a nylon sock or bag and hang it in front of a return inlet with strong water flow; alternatively, place the filter bag in the skimmer basket, provided the pump is running continuously. Shaking and squeezing the stocking in the pool water helps the stabilizer dissolve faster. After adding it, the pump must run continuously for 24 hours. If granular stabilizer is added directly to the skimmer, avoid backwashing or cleaning the filter for several days.

Powdered Stabilizer

Powdered stabilizers are rarely used. If you do use one, place the powdered stabilizer inside a sock; once it comes into contact with water, it will immediately clump together into a brick-like mass. Rub the “brick inside the sock” evenly with your hands, and the stabilizer will quickly penetrate the sock, dissolve, and disperse throughout the pool water.

CYA dissolves very slowly. It typically takes 3 to 5 days after addition for a full concentration change to be reflected in test results. Do not add additional doses within a short period.

What Are the Recommended Concentrations?

For most people, swimming pools are the primary source of exposure to cyanuric acid. Therefore, this section focuses on the recommended concentrations of it in swimming pools. Many international organizations and governments have established strict requirements regarding its concentrations in swimming pools.

  • World Health Organization (WHO): Indoor pools must not contain detectable levels, while outdoor pools must not exceed 100 mg/L.
  • National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF): Recommends a concentration range of 10–100 mg/L for cyanuric acid. This is the U.S. standard. The EU standard is the same as the U.S. standard.
Recommended Chemical Concentrations

In summary, the recommended minimum concentration should not be less than 10 mg/L, the maximum concentration should not exceed 100 mg/L, and the recommended concentration range is 30–50 mg/L.

Furthermore, the risks associated with the use of cyanuric acid can be prevented or mitigated. Therefore, when used in accordance with the instructions, it poses no risk to human health.
