● Pharmaceuticals
Antacids: Aluminum hydroxide (generic name “Algeldrate”) is used as an antacid for humans and animals (primarily cats and dogs). It is superior to alternatives such as sodium bicarbonate because aluminum hydroxide is insoluble in water and does not raise the stomach’s pH above 7, thus avoiding stimulation of excessive acid secretion. Its brand names include Alu-Cap, Aludrox, Gaviscon, and Pepsamar. It reacts with excess acid in the stomach to reduce the acidity of gastric contents, thereby relieving symptoms of ulcers, heartburn, or indigestion.
Management of Hyperphosphatemia: This compound is also used to manage hyperphosphatemia (elevated levels of phosphate or phosphorus in the blood) in patients with renal failure and in animals. Normally, the kidneys filter excess phosphate from the blood, but renal failure leads to phosphate buildup. When aluminum salts are ingested, they bind with phosphate in the intestines, thereby reducing the amount of phosphorus absorbed.
